Suicide Statistics

*Hope deferred makes the heart sick. That’s what it says in the bible, because God made our brains and emotions and knows how it feels when life lets us down. How many times have we said to ourselves,

“It must take some guts to throw yourself under a train.”

“How sad must someone be to swallow bleach.”

“How desperate the soul to put a rope round your neck and kick the stool away.”

The thing is, without Jesus there is no hope. He died to save us from the devil and to save us from ourselves. We need him oh so desperately and statistics show this to be true.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Mental Health Findings:

Suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death among persons aged 15-34 years.

Suicide was the 3rd leading cause of death among persons aged 10-14 years.

According to the Samaritans Suicide Statistics Report 2017:

There were 6639 reported suicides in the UK & Irish Republic in 2015

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:

There are approximately 121 suicides in the USA per day.

In the UK, 231 young people between the ages of 10 – 19 took their own lives in 2015. (Office for National Statistics)

According to Global Statistics, there is one suicide in the world every 40 seconds.

I’m sure you’ll agree that these statistics are shocking. No-one should have to suffer in silence, especially children.

*Proverbs 13:12

    • Yes he is, but he’s got it coming to him and God promises where sin abounds, grace does much more abound – many people are being delivered from depression and being saved from suicide, but we usually only hear the bad statistics. But I know what you mean and with those statisticsIi quoted, it appears that he is winning, but he’s not. By the way, I like your new picture – though I miss the lovely hat 🙂

  1. […] I know a lady who has had Parkinson’s Disease for many years. Her symptoms are far more severe than the tremors and mind-confusion: each day without warning, her body will suddenly send her head into a dizziness that is so bad she cannot describe it. While her head is spinning, her brain shuts down and cannot send the correct messages to her limbs to get them to move. Her arms and legs develop a shooting pain and in these minutes of torture all she wants is for God to take her life. […]

  2. I went to a suicide prevention training because a 19 year old girl completed suicide. She had been in a weekend ESL conversation group I have at my church. So tragic to see young people suffering these days.
